Phuktal Monastery, also called Phuktal Gompa, is a 12th-century Buddhist monastery founded by Tibetan Buddhist scholar and lama Geshe Kunga along the Tsarap River. It is believed by the locals that Jetsum Shakya Shri a Buddhist scholar and meditator from Kashmir came here to meditate and his meditative practices and teachings have attracted many followers to this area, leading to the creation of Phuktal Monastery. 

Phuktal is a Tibetan word where phug means cave and tal means mouth translating to the "Cave of Buddha". The monastery originated from a natural cave on a cliffside which was used by Buddhist practitioners to meditate and to do their practices. 

Phuktal Monastery is a part of the Gelugpa school of Tibetan Buddhism which has drawn monks, scholars, and pilgrims over centuries. The monastery is home to ancient scriptures, beautiful paintings, and statues, making it a spiritual and historical retreat. How to Reach in Phuktal Monastery

Phuktal Monastery is located in the isolated Lungnak Valley in Zanskar, Ladakh, and offers a wonderful experience. Phuktal Monastery is one of the only monasteries in Ladakh that can still be reached on foot. One can't reach Phuktal Monastery directly by road therefore one needs to undertake a combination of road travel and trek. 

The nearest town to the monastery is Padum. From there you need to cover a 30 km distance to Ichar by road. The road ends here and from here you can trek to Gompa and can also drive your own car or ride a bike to Gompa. The only way to go ahead is by Phuktak monastery trek.

Timings of Phuktal Monastery 

Phuktal Monastery is home to various Buddhist monks who perform their practices and meditate therefore, it follows a strict visiting time. Read further to know the timings: 

1. Morning: Visitors can visit the monastery in the morning from 6 AM to 10 AM. During this period monks are usually performing their prayers. 

2. Afternoon- Visitors can visit the monastery from 3 PM to 5 PM. It is the best time to explore the monastery and interact with the monks to get some knowledge.

3. Evening- Visitors can visit the place from 5 PM to 6:30 PM. You can witness morning prayers during this time.

Note: Opening times vary sometimes so it is advised to the visitors to discuss the timings with the locals, especially if they are visiting during the peak season or the winter season when the weather conditions are extreme.
