Hemkund Sahib is the ideal place for you if you want a spiritual and daring Uttarakhand trip. I will cover everything you need to know about the Hemkund Sahib walk in this blog article, including travel tips, what to see and how to reach. You will also learn about my own impressions and experience of visiting this holy and lovely site.

Are You Ready To Embark On A Journey Of Faith And Beauty? Let’s Get Started

How To Reach Hemkund Sahib?

Hemkund Sahib resides in Uttarakhand, India's Chamoli district. About 268 Km from Govindghat, the beginning of the journey, Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun is the closest airport to Hemkund Sahib. About 273 km from Govindghat on NH58, Rishikesh is the closest railway station to Hemkund Sahib. Additionally access Govindghat by road from Delhi, Haridwar, or any large Uttarakhand city. These locations readily provide buses and cabs to Govindghat. From Govindghat, Hemkund Sahib is 19 miles away on foot. To travel this distance, you may walk, pay for a pony, or use a helicopter. Two sections comprise the walk: Ghangaria to Hemkund Sahib (6km) and Govindghat to Ghangaria (13km). Be ready for an array climb as the second section is the steepest and roughest.

Hemkund Sahib Trek Route Details

Rising 4,633 metres above sea level, Hemkund Sahib Trek is a moderate-difficult walk. Beginning at the little town of Govindghat on the banks of the Alaknanda River, the walk follows the river to reach the Pulna settlement. From Pulna, the walk follows a well-marked path over the forest via several bridges and waterfalls. Reaching Ghangaria, a base camp for both Hemkund Sahib and Valley of Flowers treks, the 13-kilometre walk takes four to five hours. Ghangaria has many campgrounds, guest houses, and motels where one may spend an overnight stay getting ready for the following day's walk.

To reach Hemkund Sahib, the highest point of the trip, you would have to walk around six km the next day. Given you have to ascend almost 1,000 metres in elevation in a short distance, the walk is hard and demanding. The path provides amazing views of the snow-capped mountains and glaciers and winds over rocky ground and thick vegetation. As you will come across numerous pilgrims chanting and singing along the path, the journey is also spiritually fulfilling. Reaching Hemkund Sahib, where you can see the glacial lake, the gurdwara, and the temple, the walk takes three to four hours. Along with paying your respects at the gurdwara and the temple, you may swim in the lake—which is said to have therapeutic properties. Spend some time at Hemkund Sahib then, around two to three hours' walk back to Ghangaria. Either spend another night in Ghangaria or make the 4–5 hour walk back to Govindghat.

Things to do in Hemkund Sahib

Hemkund Sahib is a site of amazement and respect as much as a place of prayer. Hemkund Sahib offers many activities to keep your vacation interesting and unforgettable. The following are a few:

Take a dip in the glacial lake: Take a plunge in the glacial lake: Sikhs and Hindus regard Hemkund Sahib's lake as holy as it is said to have healing ability and atone for sins. Though many pilgrims brave the cold and plunge in the lake as a show of commitment and cleansing, the water is ice-cold. If you are spiritual and adventurous as well, you may follow suit.

Pay your respects at the gurdwara and the temple: Pay your reverence at the temple and the gurdwara. Housing the Guru Granth Sahib, the sacred book of Sikhs, the gurudwara at Hemkund Sahib is a remarkable star-shaped construction. Enter the gurdwara, cover your head, then listen to the priests reciter the songs and prayers. You may also donate and get the prasad, a delicious gift meant for the devotees. Dedicated to Lakshmana, the brother of Lord Rama, the temple at Hemkund Sahib is claimed to have been medited here after battle damage to Ravana. Go to the temple, bend your head, and place a lamp or incense stick in front of Lakshmana.

Enjoy the scenic views and the flora and fauna: Hemkund Sahib is surrounded by seven snow-capped mountains and glaciers that provide an amazing vista of the Himalayas. Enjoy the views and the vegetation and animals. You may appreciate the tranquillity and beauty of the surroundings and get some amazing pictures of it. Among the rare and exotic flowers and plants you may also find the blue poppy, which blooms only at high elevations, and the Brahma Kamal, the state flower of Uttarakhand. If fortunate, you may also find some animals such as the musk deer, snow leopard, and Himalayan bear.
